BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – People show up at Beckley Walmart bringing in toy donations and spreading holiday cheer to kids in need this Christmas.

Shade Tree Car Club is partnering with Toys for Tots of Southern West Virginia for the second year of their toy donation campaign, bringing thousands of less fortunate children across the region in a bid to make their Christmas a little more cheerful.

“It’s a toy drive at Walmart of Beckley!” And of course we need toys, lots of toys, ”says Jay Quesenberry, local Toys for Tots coordinator. “We are right in the middle of our campaign and it is the most appreciated and the most needed.”

In search of new unwrapped toys for deserving boys and girls, Toys for Tots remains a community staple for giving away during the holiday season, providing approximately 36,000 toys to over 10,000 children last year, and the need for the countryside is only growing.

The organization is seeing more demand than ever this year, with some funding cut and families still trying to pull out of the economic struggle during the pandemic.

“These toys represent hope, they represent that someone cares for these children, and the toys are a symbol to show that we love these children and want to give them Christmas morning,” he says.

The community is responding – people came out with chests of toys to give away in the trash cans outside the auto club trailer as the road just started for the day, while also contributing money to the cause. Not only are the Shade Tree Car Club happy to be hosting the cause again, Walmart is also happy to be able to help.

“For Shade Tree Car Club, we are all community focused, we care about the children in our community, it makes us so happy and we are honored to be able to help,” said Stephanie French, Vice President of Shade Tree Car Club.

“The best part about it is that my employer allows us to give back to the community and make sure the kids are taken care of,” says Greg Stover, director of the automotive department at Walmart.

In addition to promoting the donation campaign in front of Walmart, volunteers were also inside to accept toys and cash donations to the cause.

The Toys for Tots campaign will run throughout December. If you missed your chance to donate to Walmart today, you can donate online at the Toddler Toys Site.
